Since I was home sick today I had little energy to anything beyond changing channels.
I was excited to see that Will Smith would be on Oprah. I love Will Smith. I love, love, love him. I think he’s cute, funny, charming and seems like a fantastic husband and father. The song he did with Jada called 1,000 Kisses is one of my favorites. My friend Laticia always made fun of me because of my massive crush on him. I mean when one of his songs comes on I have to stop and sing. Summer doesn’t officially begin until I hear Summertime. Have I mentioned how much I love him. I love him.
He was on Oprah promoting his new movie, Pursuit of Happyness, inspired by the true story of Chris Gardner, a homeless, single father’s pursuit of the American dream. It looks like a great movie, a real tearjerker. It’s awesome to see a father’s commitment to his child regardless of the obstacles and challenges. I think its important to tell this story.
Will stars in this movie with his own 8 year-old son, Jaden. I wasn’t sure if this was his oldest son from his first marriage or his second marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith. So I googled "Will Smith marriage" to get the low down. What I found forever changed my perception of one of my favorite actors. I found a 2005 article with a London newspaper declaring that he and Jada have an open marriage.
“Our perspective is you don’t avoid what’s natural,” the actor [Will Smith] recently told a UK newspaper. “You’re going to be attracted to people. In our marriage vows, we didn’t say ‘forsaking all others’. The vow that we made was that you will never hear that I did something after the fact."
Will, 36, said he would be unfaithful to his wife of seven years, but only if 33-year-old Jada agreed to it first.
“If it came down to it, then one can say to the other, ‘Look, I need to have sex with somebody. I’m not going to if you don’t approve – but please approve of it.’”
I’m wondering if this attitude is what ended his first marriage. Perhaps the lesson he learned was to build in an escape hatch.
I don’t think he gets the point of marriage. Why would you want to get married to continue to date? Maybe he wants the little woman at home and to feel free to nail anything in his natural habitat. I don’t see how that is respecting his wife or family, what is he teaching his sons?
Why get married? What is the value of a commitment that isn’t airtight? It doesn’t mean anything. The hard part of every relationship is keeping it together. There will always be other people that you’re attracted to but marriage says you won’t act on it. You made a decision to stay with one person for the rest of your life. It isn’t natural to act on every impulse we have, this ability not to is what separates us from animals.
It really makes me sad. Isn’t anything what it seems?

Will does not have an open marriage.
The comments were taken out of context at the time. He was talking about the degre of trust and honsty the two have withing htere marriage and used that as an example. He was basically saying that if either felt like they would cheat or needed to cheat they would tell the other and ask if it was OK. If it wasn’t then they wouldn’t.
It was just about honesty and not about actually having an open marriage.
I’ll buy he was talking about the level of honesty in their marriage however it doesn’t change the fact that they didn’t include fidelity in their marriage vows, so apparently there is still the escape clause in their “contract.”
yes marti! You nailed it. Will is a class act. He would never cheat. He was just talking about honesty and truthfullness. It was completely taken out of context. He is such a good man and father. HE’S HOT TOO!!!!!!
You know what I agree with everything Will is saying. We are only human and men will always be men. I have seen it for myself. Men/Women are capable of being with someone else and then coming home and sliding into bed as though nothing happened. People are attracted to one another. A person could be in any situation and it happens. Will is not saying he will go and willfully do that. However, there are possibilities especially in his line of work. Therefore, what he is saying has to be correct. Will would never say anything or deliberately hurt his family, he is too grounded for that. Jada’s an intelligent and talented woman, she knows herself and her man.
