Tonight I happened to catch Mikey and Jordy before they went to bed. Both of them were unusually chatty, which I love. I got an unprecedented 20 minute conversation between the two of them. When I got to Mikey I asked him what was new and all he would tell me was that it was something personal. When I asked him if it involved a girl he just giggled and said he gave his mom permission to tell me.
If you read the following you can’t tell anyone, I didn’t ask if I had permission to share.
So Rocio gave me the scoop, Mikey has a girlfriend. This is his first one. I was surprised. Unlike his charismatic, 5 year-old brother who fashions himself quite the player Mikey is much more reserved. So to hear that he likes a girl, has told her, she likes him back and they call each other boyfriend and girlfriend is something amazing.
However, I was not surprised at who he chose. She looks a lot like his mom. The girl is half Venezuelan and half white. She has olive complexion, dark hair and dark eyes. Mikey informed his mom a while ago that he wasn’t attracted to fair-haired girls. He already knows his type, at 8, that is scary.
Apparently she chose him first, probably because he looks like her dad. But she sought him out, played all the video games he likes to play, and sat next to him at church - you know the typical things girls do to let the boy knows she’s interested. Like a typical boy, he didn’t get it.
Over the summer he didn’t see her that often. Then Mikey realized how he felt. So he confessed to his mom that he missed her. When he saw her again he made she she knew.
The sad thing is their young love will be interrupted, her parents are about to become missionaries to India. He knows this and is ready for it. He has even given her a ring that he purchased. Her dad joked that it’s an engagement ring but Mikey said that he just wants her to remember him when she’s gone. How cute is that.
If only I could find someone in their 30s with that much sincerity life would be great.
