My pastoral counseling and family therapy class has a large focus on the use of genograms. They are especially helpful to anyone attempting therapy from a system perspective. Their main focus is to see generational patterns.
I’ve used them before and noted several interesting trends in my own family. My assignment is to create a genogram on a non-seminary family. I’m thinking about charting Brian’s family, but he’s not convinced he wants me to, he’s afraid of what we’ll discover.
McGoldrick’s book is a how to use genograms in a therapy context. It explains how to diagram the family and assess them with this tool through the exploration of famous families from Freud, to Mia Farrow, Princess Diana and others.
It’s an easy read with practical information for immediate use.
